Gavin wakes to a flirtatious encounter with his wife, Jessica. He goes to work at the University of Georgia, where he teaches poetry. He has a big reading today, of works from his newest collection of poems.
Harry, Gavin's best friend since the second grade, goes to his job - professing English Lit at Hampshire College in Massachussetts.
Alex, also a childhood friend of Gavin and Harry, works his usual sixty-hour day in fanance, then comes home to his large house and distant wife in Northampton.
The news comes to all three suddenly: Gavin's wife has died in a car accident.
In the months to come, Gavin isolates himself: he cannot write; his classes are suffering; he doesn't return calls. Harry and Alex hatch a plan to take Gavin away, on a much-needed trip into the simplicity of the forest, to set his demons free and move forward. They choose a 100-mile backpacking trail in Maine, and round up three other friends from Gavin's past.
As the six men get deeper and deeper into the forest, they find that they are all needing to move through something. And just as one must shed their weight in hiking such a long distance, the men find the matters weighting down their lives heavy upon their backs.
Character-driven and sincere,
The Answer is a human and intelligent tribute to fraternity in the modern world. It's sure to provoke thought, invite laughter, draw tears and leave the audience tipping their hats to the beautiful and often overlooked bind of friendship between men.
